when is it going to rain ?

19 04 2007

Now coming from an english man it may seem that I’ve lost my mind. I’m not complaining the weather for the last few weeks has been amazing but the gardener in me is getting impatient. I have not been keeping a record but I know that it has not rained here in nearly 20 days as thats when I fixed the water butts so they are still sitting empty. I would also go as far as saying that it hasn’t rained for three weeks.

I’m not saying that this is a sign of global warming I’m just sick of having to use the tap to collect water for the plants and seedlings. The dry weather also means that I’m having to water the rest of the garden aswell causing me to use even more water than normal.

It does make me think about how we would cope if we relied on the rain for all our water or even just for crops without the tap I would have nothing left by now.

If it rains tomorrow don’t blame me for moaning about it and knowing my luck it will rain for the next three weeks non-stop, sorry.

hello there! how about using your bath water to feed your garden? - by hand or there’s many gadgets on the market: http://www.reuk.co.uk/Watergreen-Syphon-Pump-Recycle-Bath-Water.htm
can’t say i’ve tried it myself . . . . Big Love xx

bath water needs to be filtered before you can use it as it contains pathogens and you can only use homemade or organic products so as not to add chemicals to the water. Also our bathroom is a long way from the back garden. Other than that it’s a good idea!!

I think you’ve jinxed us mate, getting pretty horrible looking overhead!

True though, things could do with a water, getting fed up of watering things and it’s only april!

we’re scheduled to get rain on sunday, if the BBC is to be believed, but we’re on the other side of the pennines and - as i know from talking with Sarah - it can quite often be sunny and gloriously warm in one spot and cold, miserable and horribly wet and windy in the other!!

having said all that, i too am hoping for a bit of rain soon.. although i’m not getting fed up with watering. I quite like watering, at the moment, at least..

The filter sounds a good idea. Over here, everybody uses the same bath water.

I don’t think that I take a bath often enough to produce enough water for the garden!!

We finally had rain here in NE Scotland on Friday and again this morning - after almost six weeks without. All our water butts were empty (4,000 litres of capacity) but we’ve only captured 1,000 litres from those two spells of rain.

As for the borehole, it’s low so we’re on reduced useage at the moment. Combine the lack of rain with the lack of winter snowfall and summer could be grim.

Not that most Scots seems to notice…

Well it’s my second day back in the UK. It’s raining, and I wanted to cut my grass.

I’m blaming it all on you, and this post ;)

No no no - I love it to rain while I’m on holiday, and stop (and be beautiful) when I get back.

Oh…and the neighbours cat loves to use my newly dug in compost as a litter tray. Great!
